Welcome to Year 1 (Apple Class)

Mr. Smith, Class teacher.    Mrs Tiffen, Teaching Assistant.

Apple Class (Y1) is a vibrant and exciting year with the transition from Early Years to into Apple Class. The pupils are warmly welcomed each morning into a learning environment full of phonics, English, Maths, Science, PE, History, Geography and other subjects, building on from the Early Years concepts.

We strive to teach all lessons with a little more formality within each lesson, whilst allowing the pupils to explore new ideas, concepts and strategies. Supporting each child to progress and achieve through the curriculum.

Phonics knowledge is at the heart (root) of our teaching, learning new phonemes (sounds) and revisiting previously learnt sounds. In a format of 'Review, teach, repeat, use and review' approach. Constantly modelling and encouraging, segmenting and and blending to secure a fluent reader, using the Fisher Family Trust phonics scheme.

Reading is an integral part of our of our learning and supports the phonics delivered in class. We encourage the children to read daily in class as part of our sessions, and read chorally, as an echo, paired read and read independently in session. We like the children to continue reading, daily,  at home and provide a wide variety of books to chose from, as well as a focused book that supports, stretches their vocabulary and comprehension.

It is important that pupils health and mental wellbeing are supported and valued. In year 1 we make sure we are active through out the day, limiting sedentary time. Movement breaks keep the pupils active during class time and the time table sessions support movement transition.

PE and Games are delivered twice a week (Tuesday & Wednesday) using our indoor and outdoor spaces. It is very important that children attend school in their PE kit on the PE day, wearing suitable footwear for the activities. During Gymnastic, Dance and climbing activities pupils will be bare foot.
