Sustainability and Climate Action at Kirkham and Wesham Primary School
At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, we are committed to creating a sustainable future for our children and our community. We recognise that schools play an important role in protecting our environment, reducing our carbon footprint and preparing pupils to become responsible global citizens.
Our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan reflects the Department for Education's vision for a more sustainable education system. Through a whole-school approach, we are working to improve our environmental impact while providing pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for the world around them.
Our Priorities
Our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan focuses on:
- reducing our environmental impact and carbon footprint
- promoting biodiversity and enhancing our school grounds
- improving climate resilience across the school
- embedding sustainability across the curriculum
- developing pupils' understanding of environmental responsibility
- preparing children with the knowledge and skills needed for a greener future
Sustainability in Action
Children play an active role in improving our school environment through a range of practical experiences including:
- Eco Committee leadership
- energy and recycling audits
- participation in the National Education Nature Park
- habitat mapping and biodiversity projects
- outdoor learning opportunities
- recycling and waste reduction initiatives
- environmental awareness campaigns
These opportunities encourage children to develop responsibility, teamwork and leadership while making a positive difference to our school and local community.
Learning for a Sustainable Future
Sustainability is woven throughout our curriculum, particularly within Science, Geography and PSHE. Pupils develop an understanding of climate change, biodiversity, renewable energy, conservation and environmental responsibility through engaging, age-appropriate learning.
By linking classroom learning with practical experiences, we help children understand how their choices can have a positive impact on the environment and inspire them to become thoughtful, informed and active citizens.
Our Commitment
At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, we believe that caring for our environment is everyone's responsibility. By combining practical action with high-quality education, we are helping our children develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan demonstrates our ongoing commitment to protecting our environment while preparing every child to play their part in creating a greener, healthier and more sustainable world.
