Although formal MFL teaching begins in KS2, younger children are introduced to other languages and cultures through songs, stories, greetings, and classroom routines.

The Intent of our MFL Curriculum
At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, our aim is to develop confident and independent language learners. We want to inspire a love of languages and foster a cultural appreciation of the world.
Our aims:

✔ Build strong foundations in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
✔ Promote cultural awareness and understanding
✔ Develop communication skills, memory, and self-confidence
The Implementation of our MFL Curriculum
- MFL is taught through the Language Angels scheme, aligned with the National Curriculum
- Lessons are engaging, interactive, and built around progressive, clearly defined objectives
- All four language skills are introduced from Year 3 onwards
- Vocabulary, grammar, and cultural understanding are developed year on year
Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND
The Impact of our MFL Curriculum
By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will:
✔ Communicate using basic spoken and written French
✔ Understand and respond to simple spoken French
✔ Demonstrate growing confidence, fluency, and accuracy
✔ Show an appreciation for French language and culture
✔ Be well-prepared for continued language learning at secondary school
