Science at KWPS

What Science Looks Like at KWPS:

EYFS

  • Exploration and discovery through play, stories, and hands-on activities
  • Focus on understanding the world around them
  • Learning recorded in class floor books and through observations

KS1 & KS2

  • Weekly Science lessons following the National Curriculum
  • Topics cover Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • Children investigate through predicting, experimenting, observing, recording, and concluding
  • Regular retrieval opportunities to build long-term knowledge retention
  • Use of scientific vocabulary, diagrams, and presentations to share learning

The Intent of our Science Curriculum

At Kirkham & Wesham Primary School, we aim to deliver a broad, exciting, and ambitious Science curriculum that enables all children to explore and understand the world around them.

Our aims:
✔ Spark curiosity and nurture a love of science
✔ Encourage children to think like scientists—question, explore, and investigate
✔ Promote ambition and aspiration for STEM careers
✔ Build deep understanding of scientific concepts and vocabulary
✔ Provide memorable learning experiences through practical, hands-on activities

We want children to believe they can be scientists—whether that’s becoming an astronaut, toxicologist, or microbiologist—and to carry this ambition into their future learning.

The Implementation of our Science Curriculum

Science is taught in every year group, following the National Curriculum. Each year builds on previous learning to deepen understanding. Lessons include all types of scientific enquiry—such as observing, testing, researching, and classifying—to develop key skills.

Teachers clearly explain new ideas and check understanding regularly. Topics begin with children reflecting on what they already know and what they’re curious about. Previous learning is revisited to help children remember more over time.

Trips, visitors, and hands-on activities bring science to life and show its real-world relevance. Children also have regular chances to assess their own and others’ work to build independence and confidence.

The Impact of our Science Curriculum

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at KWPS will:
✔ Reach at least age-related expectations in Science
✔ Demonstrate enthusiasm and confidence in scientific enquiry
✔ Use scientific language and methods accurately
✔ Understand the importance of science in our lives and its role in shaping the future
✔ Aspire to pursue STEM-related learning and careers

The impact of our Science curriculum is seen in pupil voice, the quality of work, and the joy and curiosity shown in lessons. At KWPS, we are preparing the next generation of scientists, problem-solvers, and innovators.

Our Science Curriculum

Our science curriculum is carefully planned so that children build on what they’ve learned each year.  It follows the national requirements but also goes further to deepen children's understanding. Lessons are exciting and hands-on to help spark curiosity and encourage children to ask questions. Children are given lots of chances to explore real-life scientific ideas through investigations and activities.

Exciting Extras

  • We organise trips and workshops led by science experts to make learning come alive.

  • Special events like Science Week and themed science days give children fun and memorable experiences.

  • We invite professionals from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) fields to talk about their careers and inspire our pupils.

  • Science is often linked to other subjects like Maths, English, and Computing, helping children see how learning connects across the curriculum.

For Every Child

Every child takes part in science lessons, no matter their background or ability. We adapt lessons to suit different learning needs so all children can take part and succeed. Teachers clearly explain what children need to do to succeed, and we support them to become confident and independent learners.
