Welcome to Willow Class
Welcome to Willow Class! We are delighted to welcome you to Year 4. This is an exciting year where children continue to grow in confidence, independence and resilience as they build on their learning in Lower Key Stage 2.
In Willow Class, we provide a happy, supportive and engaging learning environment where every child is encouraged to challenge themselves, develop a love of learning and achieve their very best. Through exciting lessons, practical experiences, educational visits and enrichment opportunities, we inspire children to become curious, confident learners who are ready for the challenges ahead, helping every child to Belong, Believe and Be the Best They Can Be.
Throughout the year, children enjoy a broad and ambitious curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and understanding across all subjects while preparing them for the transition into Upper Key Stage 2.

PE
Our PE lessons take place every Monday and Thursday.
Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit on these days:
- Red KWPS PE T-shirt
- Red school jumper or cardigan
- Black shorts
- Black tracksuit bottoms (weather dependent)
- Black trainers
Please ensure all clothing is clearly named. For health and safety reasons, earrings should be removed before school on PE days and long hair tied back.
Our Learning
Learning in Willow Class is exciting, engaging and designed to encourage children to become increasingly independent learners.
Throughout the year, children enjoy a rich and varied curriculum. In History, they explore significant periods and events that have shaped Britain and the wider world. In Geography, children investigate rivers, discovering how they shape our landscapes and communities before visiting Brockholes Nature Reserve to carry out fieldwork and experience river environments first hand. They also explore tourism, visiting Kirkham Market to investigate what makes a place attractive to visitors and how tourism benefits local communities.
Across the wider curriculum, children continue to develop their creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills through practical learning experiences, investigations and collaborative projects.
Reading remains at the heart of everything we do in Willow Class. Through high-quality class texts, guided reading and independent reading opportunities, children develop fluency, comprehension and vocabulary while fostering a lifelong love of books.
Forest School
During Summer 1, Willow Class takes part in weekly Forest School sessions.
These sessions provide exciting opportunities for children to develop resilience, teamwork, confidence and problem-solving skills while exploring and learning in the natural environment.
Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
During June, all Year 4 children complete the national Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).
Throughout the year, children regularly practise their multiplication facts in class and at home to build confidence and fluency. We use engaging resources such as Times Tables Rock Stars and URBrainy to support children in preparing for this important assessment.
Homework
We believe that regular practice at home helps children develop confidence and independence.
Reading
Children should read for 10–15 minutes every evening. Please sign your child's Reading Record each time you hear them read. The Reading Record also contains useful guidance to support reading at home.
Spellings
Weekly spelling activities are sent home to reinforce spelling patterns and vocabulary taught in class.
Times Tables
Regular practice on Times Tables Rock Stars and URBrainy helps children develop rapid recall of multiplication facts and prepares them for the Multiplication Tables Check.
Educational Visits and Enrichment
We believe that memorable experiences help children make meaningful connections with their learning. Throughout the year, Willow Class enjoys a variety of visits and enrichment opportunities that bring the curriculum to life.
These include a visit to Brockholes Nature Reserve to support our Geography learning about rivers and a local fieldwork visit to Kirkham Market, where children investigate tourism and explore what makes a place attractive to visitors. These experiences encourage children to ask questions, think critically and apply their learning in real-life contexts.
