Assessment at KWPS

At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, assessment helps us understand how well your child is learning and what they need to do next. It allows teachers to celebrate success, identify any areas where additional support may be needed and ensure every child continues to make good progress.

Assessment is an important part of everyday teaching and helps us provide the best possible education for every child.

How We Assess Learning

Teachers assess children's learning throughout the school day by:

  • asking questions
  • listening to pupils explain their thinking
  • observing learning in lessons
  • reviewing work completed in books
  • providing feedback and guidance
  • checking understanding before moving on to new learning.

This ongoing assessment helps teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of every child, providing additional support where needed or extra challenge for pupils who are ready to deepen their learning.

Formal Assessments

Alongside everyday assessment, children also complete assessments at different points throughout the year. These help teachers monitor progress and identify any gaps in learning.

Depending on your child's age, these may include:

  • end of unit assessments
  • termly assessments
  • teacher assessments
  • statutory national assessments.

National Assessments

Children complete the following statutory assessments during primary school:

  • Reception Baseline Assessment (within the first six weeks of starting school)
  • Year 1 Phonics Screening Check (with Year 2 re-checks where appropriate)
  • Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
  • Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6).

These assessments help teachers understand your child's progress and support a smooth transition to the next stage of their education.

Keeping You Informed

We believe that parents and carers play an important role in supporting children's learning.

You will receive information about your child's progress through:

  • Parents' Evenings
  • an end-of-year written report
  • meetings with teachers where appropriate
  • ongoing communication throughout the year.

We encourage parents and carers to celebrate their child's achievements and support learning at home through reading regularly, practising key skills and talking positively about learning.
