Personal Development

Belong. Believe. Be the Best You Can Be.

At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, we believe that education is about far more than academic achievement. Our Personal Development curriculum helps every child to grow into a confident, caring and responsible individual who is ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.

We are committed to ensuring that every pupil feels valued, develops a strong sense of belonging and is given opportunities to discover their interests, develop new skills and achieve their full potential. Through a rich and varied programme of experiences, children learn to become respectful citizens, resilient learners and active members of their community.

Our Personal Development curriculum is carefully planned and woven throughout school life. It reflects our school motto, Belong, Believe, Be the Best You Can Be, and is underpinned by our core values of Kindness, Resilience, Equity, Honesty, Responsibility and Pride.

We believe every child should have opportunities to make a positive difference.

Our leadership roles include:

These roles help children develop confidence, leadership skills, responsibility and pride in their school community.

Character Development

Character education is embedded throughout daily school life.

We encourage children to:

  • show kindness and respect towards others
  • demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges
  • take responsibility for their learning and behaviour
  • celebrate diversity and promote equity
  • contribute positively to their local and wider community
  • develop confidence to express their ideas and opinions respectfully.

Our pupils are encouraged to recognise that mistakes are part of learning and that perseverance leads to success.

British Values

British Values are taught explicitly through assemblies, our curriculum and wider school experiences.

Children develop an understanding of:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are reinforced through pupil leadership, elections, classroom discussions, visits, celebrations and everyday school life.

Wider Opportunities

We are proud to offer a wide range of experiences that enrich children's education, including:

  • sporting competitions and festivals
  • educational visits and residential opportunities
  • themed enrichment days
  • fundraising events supporting local and national charities
  • performances and concerts
  • visitors from a range of professions and community organisations
  • celebrations of national events and awareness days.

These experiences broaden children's horizons, inspire ambition and help them discover new interests and talents.

Preparing Children for the Future

Our aim is that every child leaves Kirkham and Wesham Primary School as a confident, respectful and resilient individual who is well prepared for the next stage of their education.

By providing a broad range of experiences, developing leadership opportunities and promoting our values every day, we ensure our children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive both now and in the future.

At Kirkham and Wesham Primary School, we are proud to help every child Belong, Believe and Be the Best They Can Be.
